We use a system at our retail locations called “pre-authorization” when starting a tab. This is convenient for both our staff and customers as we can reliably ensure funds are secured for purchases, and you as the customer don’t have to worry about remembering to grab your card at the end of the evening. An unfortunate inconvenience of this is a consequence of how banks deal with reporting and updating their statements.
When a debit or credit card is pre-authorized at one of our locations, Square will “ping” the account associated with the card to confirm there are sufficient funds to make the purchase. If additional items are added to the tab, like when you order another beer, Square again “pings” the account, for the same reason as above. These transactions will show up as “pending” transactions until your bank batches out the transactions, which takes 1-2 business days. Once your bank batches out the transactions, they will no longer appear on your account statement.
